Old Mombi by saintfighteraqua Old Mombi by saintfighteraqua
Some art I did for a friend's story.
I'm doing a lot of other stuff too, but as it is story related scenes I won't be posting most of it...yet anyway.
If all goes well it may be published late this year.

Mombi is up to mischief as usual....

Old Mombi is a creation of the amazing L. Frank Baum and features in the Marvelous Land of Oz, The Lost King of Oz and other books in the Oz series.

Over The Garden Wall pretty much straight-up used this sort of design for that show's wicked witch.

I guess it's a pretty basic witch design. ;)

Other things about that character lead me to think it's not just a coincidence. IIRC, aside from water, the Wicked Witch was also terrified of the dark, was she not?

The Wicked Witch of the West was. Kind of an odd quirk for an evil character I suppose. ;)

Well, so is the witch in Over the Garden Wall. Really, if you haven't watched that, you should. it's great.

Woah!! This is awesome!
I'm sorry, I would have commented earlier, but I've been gone for a few days.

But anyway, she looks really great! Very close to how I picture her.
I like that you made the character your own, while still staying close to Neill's design. I particularly like the pointed hat and feather, nice touch!! :D

I'm very interested in your friend's story, and your art for it. Can you tell me anything about it, or is it still confidential?
I look forward to seeing more of your art, though! :)

I'm not sure I'm able to talk about it, but it will be published later this year. I have a lot of other art for it but since it's story related I can't post it yet.
He's actually asked me to help him write the story since he liked my input, so it will be my first collaborated Oz story ever. :)
If he gives me permission, I may post it on here after it's been out awhile. (I'm not sure how it will be copyrighted since it's being done through the Oz Club.)

Yes, I tried to stay true to Neill's design with her and also as per the author's request I added in some details from her appearance in "The Giant Horse of Oz". :D

Well, do you know if I'll be able to buy a copy, if I can? I would love to see all of your illustrations in entirety. :D

Congratulations! I've only written a few Oz-related short stories, nothing really "book length," but that's really cool that you will be able to collaborate on one!

Cool! I usually don't use any of Ruth Plumly Thompson's details in my designs, but I really like how your drawing turned out! :D

I think it will be for sale through the Oz Club. I'll send you a link if they put it up this year.
This story won't be book length, it will be in a collection of stories. ;)
I still hope one day to write some Oz books. I've even considered taking on rewriting the Baum books to fix continuity errors and such and maybe add detail. I know that sounds like blasphemy, but I think it would be fun to update them, even if only a few people read them.

I normally don't use Thompson's stuff either since I don't agree with much of what she wrote and thought she was too quick to change characters (I don't accept that Mombi was executed for example. That's just not like Ozma.)
This story will have a few Thompson characters in it, but thankfully they are interesting ones that I can really get into.
She did have some good characters, like Randy, Jinnicky, Gloma, Reelbad etc. But she had far too many cookie cutter characters and people even Baum might think were too weird for Oz.
Still, I usually accept her stuff as canon.

Well, I would love to read it sometime, and view your art of course! Be sure to let me know when it comes out :)

I've written a few short stories about Oz, although none of them are really "finished."
One was about Ozma asking Mombi to hunt down all of the illegal magic-users in Oz, and another was about the Queen of the Field Mice overpowering the Nome King, and yet another was about the daily life and habits of Jellia Jamb. A little different, but there you have it.

I've often considered doing that myself, and trying to re-illustrate them as well (considering the difference between Denslow and Neill's drawings, and Neill's inconsistencies in his character designs) although it seems like a difficult task to undertake. I mean, it's like re-writing Pride and Prejudice, or Great Expectations. I'm not sure how it would be received... It still seems like a great idea, though!

I generally do accept Thompson's work as canon, or at least parts of it. Some things, like Mombi's execution and the origins of the Witch of the North, I like to overlook, considering 1, they don't usually fit with facts Baum had already stated or implied, and 2, they seem far to under thought. Sometimes I feel like she was just writing whatever popped into her head, with no consideration or research involved... oh well~

Okay, I'll be sure to let you know!

I'd like to read your stories sometime too if you finish them. :)
They actually sound very interesting, I can imagine Mombi grumbling but still rather enjoying her work exposing her former cohorts and I can totally see the QFM tricking nasty old Ruggedo and I've always loved Jellia and wished she'd been used more She was hilarious in Land and only really had a big part in Ozoplaning.

Wow, it's so nice to meet someone else who knows Oz so well!

Maybe someday we can collaborate on a project such as rewriting Oz. We'd be so infamous though.

I agree about Thompson. I felt she was especially rash in Giant Horse how she handled the GWN and then had Ozma just randomly make Joe King the king of her entire Gillikin Country...I mean HELLO! What about all of the other people who could take the job? She didn't even know him...and I though he was a bit weird too.

Have you read the Book of current focus site from the Oz Club? They discuss each book in detaila dn reveal some fascinating stuff. They also do on the Regalia Archives.
Here are the links in case you don't have them:

Haha! I'm glad that you like my ideas! Sadly, they're all still in the works and I probably won't be able to finish them for some time. Perhaps this summer I might be able to finish a few, when school isn't consuming all of my time.
I tried to choose characters that are less-used, so that I could have more freedom with them. :)
I really like Jellia as well! It's a pity that Baum didn't use her very much, she was very hilarious! :D

There are a few people here on DA that I like talking about Oz with, and you're one of them! If you'd like, I could recommend a few of them to you, although you've probably already seen their work.

I might like to do that someday! It would be a very daunting task, but a fun one as well!
I've always had a dream of adapting the series as movies, or perhaps for television. I think with all of the modern special effects, it could be really amazing, especially if everything was as Baum described it. I picture it almost in a "Lord of the Rings" style, or something like that, with really great orchestrated music and fancy costumes etc.

I can't say that I have! Thanks for the links, I will definitely check them out! :D

Yes, you could recommend them to me. I might already be watching them. ;)
I talk to a few others on here about Oz, but rarely in depth like I do with you.
I know! Jellia was such a good character.
My early Oz stories were about Betsy Bobbin, Woot and other underused characters, so i know how you feel.
